Self Portrait/ Propaganda Poster


 

Adobe Illustrator was a bit harder to use this time around as I couldn't get the colors correct since the dropper would give such different shades, it became difficult. I used the mesh tool for the face to add discrete contour. The mesh mostly worked on the lips best because the face and neck path anchors were hard to manage. 

Translation: Liberty or Nothing

Statement: I believe propaganda holds a huge significance in our society. It has motivated and pushed large populations to defend their patriotism and country, It calls to action the injustices their country has suffered and asking its natives to fight back. 

As someone who has both Puerto Rican and Cuban heritage, both my countries are struggling through tyranny, under the shackles of colonization and embargos. 

Most of the inspiration comes from both my countries, heavily inspired by Cuban propaganda during the Cuban Revolution. One significant figure that is constantly shown in posters is Argentinian Marxist, Che Guevarra.

Che was an important historic figure for Cuba and has inspired young Puerto Ricans today who are starting to see Puerto Rico suffer under the consequences of a Capitalist society brought to them by other foreigners. 



In the poster, I took both my culture and my own political affiliation for motives on the design. The use of the flag comes from it's history. The Cuban and Puerto Rican flag are the same but inverted created by someone also half Cuban, half Puerto Rican. 

Che Guevarra has a famous saying of "Liberty or Death," whereas I don't believe in such extremes I used the phrase "Liberty or Nothing." I don't believe both of the countries states are in the best place, I think they both deserve to be free and if liberty can't be achieved then they shouldn't settle for capitalism, communism, or anything of that stature. The point of my poster is not to settled, but to keep achieving towards freedom.

  Hi... My name is Jennifer. If I gave you my full government name then nobody would know how to pronounce it. I am from San Juan, Puerto Rico. A very small island that is part of the Caribbean archipelago and has approximately 5 million citizens currently.
